Synopsis:

Botnets are emerging threat with hundreds of millions of computers infected. A study shows that about 40% of all computers connected to the Internet in the world are infected bots and controlled by attackers. In the past ten years, botnets have evolved from small networks of a dozen PCs controlled from a single C&C (command and control Centre) into sophisticated distributed systems comprising
millions of computers with decentralized control.  This exponential growth of botnet is fuelled by potential financial gain. Botnets can be used by cybercriminals to conduct a wide range of criminal activity, from sending spam to attacking various networks.  Botnets or a zombie networks have become a source of income for entire groups of
cybercriminals.  The invariably low cost of maintaining a botnet and the ever-diminishing degree of knowledge required to manage one are conducive to growth in popularity and, consequently, the number of botnets. Botnets have become widespread in wired and wireless networks, whereas the relevant research is still in the initial stage.

We present a survey of botnets and discuss fundamental concepts of botnets, including formation and exploitation, lifecycle, and two major kinds of topologies. Several related attacks, detection, tracing, and countermeasures, are then introduced.
